What to Wear...for Halloween

Halloween is coming up and all I can say is ... boy oh boy oh boy oh boy.  I just had a post published on BlogHer (love this site and the women who make it happen!) about culturally inappropriate Halloween costumes that just shouldn't exist...and boy was it a doozie.  Folks wearing KKK costumes, folks in Mexican bandito costumes, folks in Blackface, yada yada yada.  The furrow in my brow still isn't gone.  Blech!
When BlogHer reached out to me to write the post, I remember being excited that I was yet again being paid for my voice (!) and then immediately wondered how I was going to pull it off.  As you may or may not know, I'm the Brown Girl that celebrates culture with a positive spin.  It's in my nature and a part of the whole OBG mission to look at the bright and beautiful side of culture without, of course, burying my head in the sand.  With a few exceptions, I have left it up to others to have the more serious discussions about race.  You know what I mean:  The discussions that never really solve anything, keep us separated, and get folks all riled up.  Blech!
So I've decided to flip the script, get back to what it is I do, and dump the furrow in my brow.  Here are some Halloween costumes that celebrate culture in a positive way and get the OBG seal of approval although I will admit that it took longer to find the culturally acceptable costumes than it did to find the culturally inappropriate costumes!  And BTW, if you choose a cultural costume for Halloween, it is my opinion that it should at least be reasonably authentic and not over-sexualized.  If you have to question yourself, how about this:  Just don't put it on.  =)

Enjoy!
Who doesn't appreciate a beautiful Asian princess?

This lovely Princess Jasmine costume is from Aladdin.

Cleopatra is always always a cool choice.  One of my favorites.
I love flamenco and I love this Spanish flamenco dancer costume!

Watch out now!
I've never been to Greece (yet), and I've never met a goddess (well, you know what I mean...LOL),

but I think this Greek Goddess costume is lovely.  =)
The right Native American costume is tricky to find, but I like this one.
No feathers, no Tomahawk, no war paint.  Niiice.

Happy Halloween!
