Boulangerie - Le Marais

Copyright Carla Coulson
I live in the heart of Le Marais in Paris and love this arrondissement. Once upon a time it was the Jewish quarter of Paris but is now shared with the gay community which makes it the most happening quarter in Paris. I took this pic at one of the local bakeries and just as I framed the door a Jewish man passed by. Merci Monsieur... Hope you like it. Paris today is perfect! The sun is shining, the Parisians are back from their holidays all tanned and smiling, weddings are in full force at the local town hall as I do my shopping in my local market, the outdoor cafes are full with the young and the old soaking up the sun. Paris has never looked better.

Paris wasn't an instant love affair for me, kind of like fallling in love with a guy who annoyed you at the beginning but over timed proved to be a gem.

My sixth anniversary of moving to Paris will be upon me shortly and oh how have things changed. I once wandered this city full of loneliness and longing to leave. Now the same streets fill me with happiness and love for the beautiful worlds tucked behind big wooden doors and for all the big personalities that inhabit the shops, bars and ateliers.

To celebrate such a fine day in Paris I dug out some of my old pics that were published in Paris Tango a couple of years ago of the personalities that I found on the streets of Paris.

What would Paris be without them?

Paris Tango..Places

I have had a crazy wonderful two weeks in Australia catching up with old friends, hanging out with my nieces and nephews and attending the launch of drum roll....... Paris Tango. Ithought I was never going to finish the book which took the best part of three years knocking on doors in Paris trying to photograh Paris 'behind closed doors'- which proved quite a challenge. Many wonderful Parisians helped me, Perfumer Frederic Malle told me his story as did Renzo Piano the architect of the Centre Pompidou, Chantal Thomass, the high priestess of lingerie, Djorde Varda florist at the Ritz Hotel and artists Hippolyte Romain and Carlos Regazzoni and their Paris insights and stories are included in the book. Here is a little preview of some of my pics of Paris and I will post more pics of my favourite faces soon.
I hope you like them Carla x

Paris Tango designs by Hippolyte Romain

Hippolyte Romain is a born and bred Parisian artist who with a flick of a squirrel hair brush creates dreamy scenes of modern day Paris. I found Hippolyte by accident when a friend of mine suggested that I check out the sublime 'artists tea room' he has created in an ancient hothouse that was built for Princess Eugenie in the Jardin d'Acclimatation. I am so proud to have six of his incredible visions of Paris in Paris Tango. I love his elegant eye for detail, his black strokes of women in the Artists, his extravagantly dressed and undressed women backstage at the Haute Couture, his mixture of true Parisians in burka's and on roller skates in front of Cafe de Flore, the chaos and colour of the dancers in La Bal, the assortment of dogs and the well dressed children peacefully strolling in a Parisian garden. Thanks Hippolyte....
