Alexandre Mussard: " Les Petites Chaises "

Entitled " Les Petites Chaises," Little Chairs, is Alexandre Mussard's first exhibition at the Galerie Antonine Catzeflis in Paris. The 25-years-old French artist studied architecture and design at the Academie Charpentier, Esad Reims, and Ecole Camondo. It was during a course, by twisting a wire, that he gave shape to his first small chair.

" I have treasured this miniature sculpture. I immediately knew that it was going to become something essential for me. This little chair is like a character brought to light, fragile, playful and discrete....."

Mussard's show is dedicated to the chair in the form of miniature wire sculptures, displayed in various positions: chairs come alive, set in the middle of a circus tent - a wink to Calder's small circus - stacked on top of each other or suspended by balloons. Alongside the small artworks, including necklaces, are several larger chair sculptures.

Knoll Printed Matter (Part I)

Easing into 2011 with some visual, gourmet comfort food.

Way in advance of spring, and the opening of the exhibition, Knoll Textiles, at the Bard Graduate Center on May 18, I trust these Herbert Matter-designed ads, posters, and catalogs for Knoll will whet your appetite for both (spring and the show).

Matter was a design consultant to Knoll from 1946-1966. The Swiss-born designer and photographer was a pioneer of photomontage, among other darkroom techniques and a master of merging type with image. His is the Knoll identity you know so well, that you recognize it without seeing a piece of furniture or reading a word of text.

I can’t say exactly when during the next few months I’ll be posting “Part II,” but I can safely predict that there will be one. The selection here represents only a fraction of Knolliana produced over the years. And that’s before we even get to the textiles ...

Gaetano Pesce: Pieces From A Larger Puzzle

Pieces From A Larger Puzzle, the first retrospective in the Western United States of architect, artist, and designer Gaetano Pesce, celebrates the maestro of art-design and his years of experimenting and creating works with polyurethane foam, resin, and plastics. The exhibition is on view through August 31 at the Italian Cultural Institute in Los Angeles. Many of the designer's most iconic pieces, including also his most recent work, his limited-edition plastic shoes from the Brazilian company Melissa are displayed.

These series of lamps were created for the interior of Il Costello, a restaurant in Florence Italy, and designed by Gaetano Pesce, a rather unique installation.

DAVID IATESTA : THE AKERO

This can be a very hard decision for clients. I think it is as important or more so than a dining chair. It typically gets tons of use. Meals, Snacks, Homework, Computer. It all happens at the BAR.

3 that I would add to Elle's list. I have discussed using them in an upcoming project.

All 3 have details that I like. The Athletic Club's rush back with comfortable upholstered seat would work seamlessly in the large Kitchen with simple cabinets perfectly executed in a pigeon gray color & walls that follow. The other pieces in the adjacent Breakfast Room will be French Chairs & a Inlay Table. These pieces are being requisitioned from the current Dining Room. New fabric might likely be a cool ivory or gray leather. Another good bet for the room is an Urban Electric light featured in an earlier post here.

While the design of the Dunham chair pleases, the space likely needs something a bit more refined. The David Iastesta chair combines tradition and modern elegance. Less of a period style, the Aero has the refined qualities of the Charles Pollock chair but streamlines the intent. The Iatesta finishes add the deluxe factor, shown here in a pearwood finish on cherry.
